Plastic packaging and plastic bags are one of the greatest worldwide environmental hazards of modern society. In 1998 Biostarch began research to develop a cost effective, fully biodegradable, 100% compostable bio-polymer film, made principally from starch. Biostarch Technology Pte Ltd was registered in 2004 and the technological process to produce the Biostarch bio-polymer film was registered for international patent in 2005. Biostarch film successfully completed testing in February 2007, meeting EN 13432 European Compostable Standard, ASTM-6400-99 American Standard for Compostable Plastics and AS 4736-2006 Australian Biodegradable Standard.
